The Importance of Agriculture, Hana, and Influencing the Next Generation Mentioned in an Interview with Kohala-Located, Kahua Pa'a Mua's Own David and Carol Fuertes
Building a Strong Foundation for the Future: David and Carol Fuertes
For the inaugural issue of the Aloha Grown monthly newsletter, we wanted to highlight individuals who are creating a lasting impact in Hawaiʻi Island’s communities. David and Carol Fuertes, founders of Kahua Paʻa Mua, are a true example of that mission in action. Based in Kohala, Kahua Paʻa Mua is a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening Hawaiʻi’s future through agriculture, education, and food sustainability. Born and raised on Kauaʻi during the era of the Olokele Sugar Company, David Fuertes has spent his life committed to teaching and serving others. After serving during the Vietnam Era, he earned his teaching degree from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and began a career in agricultural education. He taught agriculture and natural resources at Kohala High School before serving nearly 30 years with the Hawaiʻi Department of Education’s West Hawaiʻi Division.
Kahua Paʻa Mua: “Building a Strong Foundation”
Today, David continues his passion for education as Executive Director and Master Teacher of Kahua Paʻa Mua, alongside Carol, who serves as Program Manager. Founded 15 years ago, Kahua Paʻa Mua—meaning “building a strong foundation”—teaches food sustainability and self-reliance through hands-on agricultural experiences. “We work with kids, and also adults, in developing food sustainability and food resilience,” David explains. “We have a diversified farm with vegetables, pigs, cattle, and egg production. It’s about teaching people to become more self-sustainable and creating this backyard revolution so everyone can grow their own food.” For the Fuertes family, agriculture is about more than farming. It is about mālama i ka ʻāina—caring for and respecting the land. Through sustainable practices, they teach that healthy land creates healthy communities.
The Importance of Experience
Carol believes the most powerful lessons come through experience. “When they come to our farm, they work with the animals, learn how to maintain the farm, plant, grow, harvest, and ultimately put food on their own tables.” Caring for the land also means being responsible stewards of what it provides. “When we mālama the ʻāina, we’re aware of what we can grow, when we can grow it, and how much we’ll produce so there’s no waste,” Carol shares. “We consider our community our ʻohana. If we have an abundance, we share it with the food hub.”
The Community Over Challenges
Like many nonprofit organizations, Kahua Paʻa Mua faces challenges, including rising costs for water, feed, equipment, and the ongoing need for consistent funding. Expanding agricultural education while encouraging younger generations to pursue farming remains a shared goal. “It’s really expensive,” Carol says. “Grants and donations barely keep us going, but educational programs are worth doing.” Despite these challenges, David and Carol remain dedicated to their community. Throughout the year, they host community imu gatherings where families come together to cook, share meals, and strengthen relationships. They also donate surplus harvests to local food hubs, reinforcing their belief that community is an extension of ʻohana.
